The political climate in America is extremely heated this summer. Chances are, the political dynamics will continue to ramp up between now and November, and beyond. You may be feeling an array of emotions. This is why it is important to go ahead and link with a trained Therapist to prepare yourself to have the support you need, whatever your political affiliation. At MySpectrum Counseling & Coaching, we have a team of over 60 Therapists throughout Virginia who meet with clients through our Teletherapy Services, or online counseling. This way, therapy is convenient, since everything else, particularly considering the political landscape, is so stressful.

Politics can stir deep rooted beliefs, feelings, and conversations. Relationships, identities, jobs, finances, families, all impacted by politics. Anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, paranoia, stress, just some of the mental health issues that could result from political situations. For some of us, we might recognize the association between our emotions and the heated political situation in America. For others of us, we might not fully recognize how societal dynamics contribute to our inner emotions, sense of safety, security, and belief in the future.

As with most things, when you don’t talk about something, it tends to build up inside and can often result in bursts of emotions that seem to come from nowhere. Daily, we are exposed to the news about shifting political views and situations. While we might not realize it at the time, all of this information builds in our subconscious. Because politics can greatly impact our way of life, the impact of what builds up inside can be significant, especially if we don’t work through the emotions, triggers, and feelings in a routine and healthy manner.

While some of us allow it all to build up inside, others of us are very vocal about politics. Discussing politics and views is very important, and encouraged, as long as it’s done in a constructive and respectful way. If you find yourself getting into unproductive arguments, endless debates, or even wanting to act out in some way, it might be a good time to think about welcoming a trained professional to the conversation.

Depending on your views about mental health and therapy, we understand that contacting a therapy practice for counseling might not be favorable, or even something you believe in. We would like to challenge those beliefs and encourage you to reach out and give it a try. Therapy is confidential, and like other health services, protected by HIPAA. It’s a safe space for you to fully and truly be you, and not worry about what someone else thinks or feels. It’s your time and your opportunity to deal with the world in which we live. At MySpectrum, we recognize that political beliefs exist on a spectrum and welcome anyone with any political standing.
