Autism Spectrum Therapy In Virginia

MySpectrum is the ideal place to turn for outpatient autism therapy in Virginia, no matter where you live in the state. In addition to traditional in-person sessions, we also offer autism teletherapy. So whether you are near our home office in North Chesterfield or all the way up in Northern Virginia, MySpectrum can provide your family with treatment in the comfort and safety of your home.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is typically characterized by difficulty with social interactions, repetitive behaviors, extreme focus on certain interests, learning differences, a perceived lack of emotion, or other traits that are unique to each individual with Autism, or who is on the Autism Spectrum.

Because ASD is so varied, we will work with you and your family on your specific needs.

We recognize that this may include a range of developmental struggles, from communication, social interaction, relationships, behavior, and a host of other need areas. We will help provide education of ASD to clients and loved ones, intervention and treatment in specific goal areas, and a supportive environment for everyone affected.

How Autism Counseling Helps You

If you’re concerned you or your child may have symptoms of ASD, it’s important to understand some of the potential signs. These may include speech delays, avoiding eye contact, a lack of interest in playing with other children by age three, and obsessively repeating certain words or phrases. A child, adolescent, or adult who exhibits one or more of these behaviors may benefit from autism counseling.

When seeking in-person or online autism therapy for a loved one through us, he/she/they can receive numerous benefits. Some of the areas where you may notice improvements during autism behavior therapy include language and communication skills, attention and focus, social skills, stronger family bonds, and a greater acceptance of oneself on the neurodivergent spectrum.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there treatments available for autism?

Anyone who has ASD may experience a wide range of signs, including speech delays, social challenges, and developmental issues. As such, there is no one specific treatment for autism. However, the skilled and compassionate therapists here at MySpectrum will work closely with you and / or your child to develop a comprehensive plan for autism behavior therapy to determine what will be best for addressing theunique situation. Therapy at MySpectrum is not traditional ABA or Applied Behavioral Analysis. Rather, we provide counseling to talk through how Autism impacts daily living, discuss strategies for navigating the world and relationship with Autism, and provide a space of acceptance to work through any specific area that is helpful to each person.

Which medications are typically used to treat autism?

As of now, there is no medication that can address autism as a whole. There are, however, certain medications that can alleviate specific behaviors that are often experienced by someone with Autism. For example, the FDA has approved risperidone to relieve mood swings and aggression that are sometimes symptoms of ASD. The MySpectrum  therapist may refer to a qualified Nurse Practitioner or Psychiatrist to target a particular symptom, such as hyperactivity or compulsive behaviors.

What actions should I avoid when interacting with an autistic child?

Raising a child can be difficult under even the best of conditions, and raising one who has ASD can be even more challenging. It’s important to remember to never let he or she believe there is something wrong because of the diagnosis. ASD is a part of the person and should actually be celebrated. Experts also recommend sticking to routines and keeping chores and tasks as simple as possible.

How is autism diagnosed?

Therapists have to spend time observing and interacting with an individual to make an accurate diagnosis. In general, they look for any deficits in social interactions as well as any repetitive behaviors. There are specific tests that can be completed to make a formal diagnosis of Autism. MySpectrum does not currently complete Autism testing, but we will work with you to locate a testing site and provide ongoing therapy before, during, and after testing.
