THERAPY FOR SENIOR CITIZENS
Aging can be tough and full of various life struggles that are hard to navigate on your own, or even alongside close friends and family. MySpectrum recognizes this and wants to invite you to consider our Teletherapy service to help you through this pivotal and important part of your life journey. We have trained Therapists who can serve as an impartial person to join you in your journey as you navigate the ups and downs of this life stage.
There is no real definitive answer to what age is considered “Senior”. It usually depends on a lot of factors like retirement, benefits, healthcare, and eligibility for certain programs. Medicare sets the age at 65 years, while Social Security might allow benefits to start at age 62 years, depending on the year of birth. At MySpectrum, we consider a Senior to be anyone who has crossed a typical mid-life age, which could be anyone age 50+, with an emphasis on those toward the higher end of the age spectrum – mostly because this age group is often forgotten.
It’s somewhat ironic that a lot of focus is placed on childhood, young adulthood, and even mid-life, but we don’t talk a lot about the mental health needs of the older population. Several misconceptions exist such as they have less to worry about, they’ve already experienced most of their traumas, or they’re settled in their ways by that point. What reality has shown us, though, is that older adulthood and being a part of the Senior generation might actually be the toughest part of the whole life spectrum.
As a Senior, you might be dealing with increased physical health struggles, you might be adjusting to new living situations, you might miss working as much as you once did, you likely have experienced multiple deaths of close friends and family. Maybe you wake up looking in the mirror and you don’t see that vibrant person you were before, and can’t quite recognize the person you have become. Life has a way of catching up to us, and at MySpectrum, we want to make sure you know we are here. You are not forgotten.
Conditions We Can Treat That Seniors Often Experience:
Our therapy services for seniors can help you address the root causes of your mental health concerns and find lasting relief from conditions such as:
- Anxiety — Constant worry about what could happen in the future can leave you unsure about what to do in the here and now. Maybe you’re thinking about estate planning, losing independent functioning, family growing apart, or impending physical health challenges that come with age.
- Grief — When you have lived a long life, it is a given that you have experienced loss, death, and sadness. Grief could even be grieving your life, and looking back on the things you accomplished and perhaps, the things you didn’t accomplish and wish you did.
- Depression — Many Seniors report feeling overwhelmed by feelings of despair and helplessness, unable to see how the rest of their life will unfold and what the dying experience could entail. This is especially true if you have lost physical or cognitive functioning, or worry about losing any of these abilities as you age. Seniors might also feel like everyone else is moving on in the world, and forgetting about them. This can be a depressing and isolating feeling. We see you. You are not alone.
- Stress — The effects of stress can have a tremendous impact on the way we face the world, which can lead to increased anxiety, depression, or even suicidal thoughts. For Seniors, managing stress is even more important because stress can impact physical health and result in serious health concerns like heart attack and stroke.
- Sleep disorders — Dealing with life changes can make it very difficult to get a good night’s sleep, which can leave you ill-prepared for what lies ahead the next day. Sometimes, as we age, we may tend to sleep more as well. Either way, when sleep is impacted, overall well-being is affected, including general mental health.
