Lauren Powell, M.Ed., CSAC Resident in Counseling
Outpatient Therapist,

Practicing Under the Supervision of
Keith Huffman, LPC

Lauren graduated from Roanoke College in 2021 with a Bachelors degree in Psychology. She then moved to Lynchburg, Virginia, to complete her Master’s of Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Lauren then moved to Richmond, Virginia, to finish her internship, graduating from the University of Lynchburg in August of 2023. She is a Resident Counselor in the state of Virginia, practicing under the supervision of Keith Huffman, LPC, at MySpectrum. Lauren also holds a Certified Substance Use Counselor (CSAC) credential.

While in graduate school, Lauren worked full-time at an outpatient substance use treatment center as a care coordinator and now works full time in an outpatient substance use treatment center. She is a part-time Teletherapist at MySpectrum specializing in Substance Use Treatment. Lauren has a passion for working with underserved and underrepresented populations and the substance use population in particular holds a very special place in her heart. Lauren spends a lot of time information and resource gathering for people both in and out of recovery, and advocates for the population through harm reduction and Narcan availability.

Lauren takes a holistic approach to counseling as she understands that the best outcome for therapy requires bridging the gap between mental and physical health. Lauren’s theoretical orientation leans more towards behaviorism, so she typically uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing, and Solution-Focused therapy.

Lauren is very casual in her therapy sessions and aims to have the client laugh or smile at least once, even during the heavy sessions. Lauren is familiar with the NA/AA pathway to recovery and supports all pathways to recovery. While not in recovery herself, Lauren has a passion for helping those in active addiction as well as those maintaining long-term recovery. Lauren also works with clients who have general mental health and life stressor concerns, such as depression, anxiety, impulse control, and parenting. Lauren enjoys working with court-mandated clients as she understands that legal issues are an (unfortunately) relatively prevalent factor in a person’s recovery journey. As her career progresses, Lauren hopes to open her own recovery house one day to support the transitional period between incarceration or homelessness as a result of addiction into a flourishing and fulfilling life as a sober person.

While not working as a therapist, Lauren enjoys attending indoor and outdoor car shows, drift events, creating digital art, and listening to music.
