Katherine M. Shinal, LPC, NCC
Teletherapist

Kathy received a Bachelors degree in Philosophy and Sociology of Religion, with a minor in Religious Studies, from George Mason University. She received a Masters Degree in Pastoral Counseling from Loyola University Maryland. Kathy is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Virginia, and a National Certified Counselor.

Kathy is a Pastoral Counselor with years of experience treating individuals and groups with serious mental illness, substance abuse, and trauma in residential and outpatient settings. Her work as a member of an interdisciplinary team provided her with training and experience in assessing and diagnosing, collaboratively identifying goals, developing treatment plans, strengthening coping strategies, and discharge planning. Kathy provided many of these services through Teletherapy and finds it a remarkable tool for removing barriers to treatment. She is ready to help you on your path to wellness through Teletherapy at MySpectrum!

Kathy has experience working with individuals with Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorders, Depression, Anxiety, Grief and Loss, concerns related to aging, and influence of spirituality on individuals’ wellbeing. She enjoys working with adults and older adults, Veterans and their families, individually and in group settings. In the therapeutic relationship, Kathy encourages self-exploration and personal growth, teaches coping skills, and promotes forgiveness. Her collaborative approach offers hope and support to those seeking to alleviate stress, anxiety, grief, guilt, loss, and depression. Kathy’s non-judgmental, person-centered way of being creates a safe and empowering space for individuals to heal and strengthen resolve and resilience to overcome adversity and hardship. Kathy uses a customized approach during the therapeutic process utilizing modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Solution Focused Brief Therapy to assist individuals interested in correcting problems and making changes in their lives.

When she is not working, Kathy attends church, enjoys keeping up with family and friends, takes walks with Maggie (her favorite four-legged friend), and loves making soup!
