John Berry, LPC
Outpatient Therapist
John received a Masters degree in Mental Health Counseling from Longwood University. John is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Virginia.
John has an array of experience in the mental health field including outpatient therapy, psychosocial rehabilitation, in-home and community-based counseling, and mental health administration and supervision. John joined MySpectrum in 2022 and has been pleased to be a part of a collaborative and exceptional team of professionals.
John specializes in treating individuals who suffer from self-esteem issues including low confidence, poor boundaries, negative self-image or self-concept, people pleasing, fear of failure, insecurities, and discomfort with self-expression. Though poor self-esteem is not a stand-alone mental health condition, John works from the standpoint that many of the concerns that drive people to come to counseling are linked to how satisfied they are with themselves and how worthy they feel. Additional specialty areas include the treatment of anxiety and depression, interpersonal and relationship issues, anger management, and stress management. While these are within John’s main wheelhouse, he is pleased to work with clients interested in learning if his approach may be a good fit for them regardless of the specific concern.
John is always seeking to add variety to his counseling experience and has worked with several unique populations including college students, seriously mentally ill adults, individuals who are disabled, veterans, at-risk children and youth, homeless people, fellow mental health professionals, and those who identify with some part of the LGBTQIAP+ spectrum, among others. John currently works with adult clients and couples.
John’s approach to providing counseling involves a bit of humor, building a solid client-counselor relationship, a lot of intention, and commitment to building on the foundations of the client’s values and goals. John strives to be a supportive counselor and finds great value in being an agent of change for the clients he works with. John integrates treatment methods from many different theoretical models including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills training. John is also an advocate for mindfulness practice and education, which plays a major role in his practice. Above all, John believes his mission is to support his fellow humans in finding ways to reach their goals, to feel well and grounded, and to be nice to themselves as much as possible.
Outside of work, John is a fan of spending time with loved ones, cooking, and binge-watching movies and historical dramas.
